John F. Moffitt

Book DescriptionThe purpose of this book is to reveal the antique pedigree of a now commonplace term, "Inspiration," an essential creation-myth now propelling notions of "self-expression" in modern art-making. Knowledge of the ancient sources of such supposedly "modernist" fixations will make a significant contribution to historical-cultural thinking, particularly by showing in detail the facts of an unrecognized evolutionary continuity. In order to personify "Inspiration," this study initially focuses upon Michelangelo's Bacchus of 1496, so revealing now-forgotten meanings once typically to be attached in a generic way to any "Bacchus." Then it demonstrates how these "Dionysiac" concepts arose in ancient Greece. Later developments--particularly from theMiddle Ages through the Renaissance--are traced here for the first time. Due to further modifications by Friedrich Nietzsche, Dionysiac "expressionism" eventually became a staple of modern art theory and practice. ...

David McCabe

Book DescriptionFreshly arrived in New York from his native UK, David McCabe was contacted in early 1964 by Andy Warhol after the artist had seen a layout by the young photographer in the pages of "Mademoiselle". McCabe was assigned the gigantic and veryWarholesque project of documenting the artist's life for a whole year. Warhol would, spontaneously and on a regular basis for that whole year, call and invite McCabe to his studio, or to whatever event he was about to attend. Some 2500 photographs later,McCabe had succeeded in capturing Andy in the most various events and settings that characterized his life at the time: Andy chatting with Barnett Newman at some Fifth Avenue art openings, Andy at the crowded and psychedelic parties at the Factory, Andy drinking his morning coffee at the diner around the corner, Andy working on the first "Flower" paintings in his studio with assistant Gerard Malanga, Andy and Edie Sedgwick preparing to shoot a movie scene, Andy alone, Andy with! ...

Antoni Muntadas

Book DescriptionSpanish vanguard artist Antoni Muntadas has long considered the process of language and translation as his base materials. In a 1995 manifesto, the artist proclaimed his concern with the way in which the transmission of information through different systems and its subsequent translation can transform, fragment, deform, and even obscure or censor any original meaning. Since then, Muntadas' work has continuously been fed by such concerns. This current catalogue is no exception. An extension of Muntadas' recent solo show at the Laboratorio de Arte Alameda in Mexico City, this publication offers a critical view of what the artist proposes in his deconstruction of language. Essays by Magalie Arriola, Nestor Garcia Canclini, and FranciscoReyes Palma. Paperback, 9.5 x 8.25 in. / 184 pgs / 108 color and 40 b&w.

Van Abbemuseum

Book DescriptionIn the early 1930s Henri van Abbe began to dream of building a center in Eindhoven where its people could be introduced to the mysteries of contemporary art--a place where they could enjoy art. In 1936 he realized this dream by donating to the city the Van Abbemuseum, which, at that time, still consisted primarily of artworks purchased and placed on loan by Henri van Abbe himself. Sixty years later, the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum has grown into one of the most prominent museums for modern art in the world. Through the course of its history, the visionary acquisition policies of its often distinguished directors have given rise to an impressive collection that includes works by modern masters such as Picasso, Braque, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, and Mondrian, as well as by contemporary artists like Douglas Gordon, Pierre Huyghe, Mike Kelley, and Marijke van Warmerdam. This publication of this first reference work on the Van Abbemuseum's collection marks the opening...

Simon De Pury

Book DescriptionDamien Hirst's Alone Yet Together , a pseudoscientific installation of fish suspended in formaldehyde in small, identical glass boxes, graces the cover of this volume. As the singular image selected to represent the Pisces Collection, it demands some exploration of wordplay. Pisces is, after all, the zoological term for fish and also the name of a zodiac sign--the astrological sign, as it happens, of the collection's anonymous owner. Devoted to contemporary art from the 1980sonward, the Pisces Collection takes not an encyclopedic approach but a focused one, concentrating on representing the work of a relatively small group of artists in depth. For the first time, 150 pieces from this very valuable collection are presented tothe international public, featuring work by John M. Armleder, Ross Bleckner, George Condo, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Mariko Mori, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince,...

Quentin Buvelot

Book DescriptionThis richly illustrated volume offers a selection of the most beautiful Dutch seventeenth-century paintings from the Lugt Collection. The great connoisseur Frits Lugt (1884-1970) is today primarily recognized as a collector of drawings and prints by Dutch and Flemish masters. Far less is known, however, about his important collection of paintings. There can be no doubt that Lugt had a taste for the unusual in the oeuvre of famous artists, and that he had a marked preference for landscape paintings. The works--mostly executed in a small format--are not only well preserved but also of exceptional quality, designed to fit perfectly in the intimacy of a home.

David Hotchkiss Price

David Hotchkiss Price, a specialist in Renaissance cultural and ecclesiastical history, has broken new ground with this comprehensive analysis of Renaissance humanism as the foundation for Durer's religious art and, in particular, for Durer's reception of the Reformation movements. David Price is Associate Professor of History and of Church History, Southern Methodist University.

His thick, mellow brushstrokes explore an empty, suspended world of silence with great realism and the constant motif of a lunar light that illuminates the compositions with unexpected gleams, revealing fragility. Essay by Mimmo Di Marzio. Paperback, 9 x 11.75 in. 64 pages, 20 color illustrations
